Mens Essentials – Polo Shirt

The Polo Shirt is the staple for any man’s wardrobe, whether it be a summer or winter style, it’s a must have.  It has always been an everyday, easy to wear clothing essential and its bang on trend even more now than ever before.

Polo shirts can be worn and styled in a number of ways which can instantly change the feel of the outfit.

These Shirts stem back to the 19th Century, where it was better known as the Tennis Shirt. Although today, it is still considered a sporting Shirt with Golf and Tennis as the two main offenders, this is still putting some gents off wearing these.

Layering a Polo Shirt up with a top below can add a totally new dimension to the traditional style, while adding depth and warmth to the look. If you are going to layer up, make sure you can still see part of the sleeve, hem and collar, which let people know it’s layered. If the Polo is shorter, it’s a great way to help elongate the polo.  Keeping the collars up adds to the casual feel. Polo’s can be teamed with almost anything, jeans, chinos and shorts.

Olly Murs is a perfect example of the modern day man wearing polo shirts and styling them perfectly, taking inspiration from the 80’s era. Olly teams his polo with darker jeans, rather than the washed out look, which give a more casual feel to the outfit.

For the past few seasons more and more brands are bringing out the traditional Polo Shirt with a modern twist, weather that be their own brandings style being translated onto the garment, bringing fresh new ideas with exciting new elements to plain shirts.

The new Spring/Summer 2012 collections are set to be full of interesting and inspiring designs and colours of Polo Shirts.
